“Thoroughbreds” — What Do You Get When You Cross a Schizoid and a Sociopath?
Bad things, coolly calculated, carefully planned bad things…that you’ll want to see. Trust me, you’ll want to see this.
On average, fourteen new films hit American cinemas each week. Some hit a few screens, some a few hundred, only a handful make it to wide release, and if you judge them by how wide they go, you’ll miss some of the best. Still, not even the people who make their livings critiquing films can see them all.
So, how do you decide?
You listen to people who’ve seen them. And this week, they’re saying “see this one”, the one that scored twice as high at Rotten Tomatoes as the next best film, and three times as high as the rest. For adults the choice is obvious —
— the film you want to see is “Thoroughbreds”.
The film features two of my favorite, not unknown, but not yet celebrated young actors, Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy, in what I consider to be not just their best performances, but their biggest, most juicy roles — and given their filmographies, that’s no small statement.
