“Red Sparrow” Won’t Surprise You, and that’s the Problem

In fact, the only surprise will be how few surprises there are.

Whether “Red Sparrow”s your movie or not will depend on two things:

  1. Are you ready to invest $10 and 2 hours and 19 minutes to see Jennifer Lawrence nearly nude?
  2. Have you ever seen a truly clever spy movie?

If watching Jennifer Lawrence disrobe, or mostly disrobe every so often is important, you may not hate “Red Sparrow”.

But, if you’ve ever seen a truly clever spy film, this may disappoint, because it isn’t very clever, and no matter how big the names in the marquee, and how well they deliver their lines, they’ve got to live within the story.

“Red Sparrow” is based on the 2013 novel of the same name. Note that date, because the film will remind you of 1993, about the time Jason Matthews, the author, was a covert CIA agent in Europe.

See the film and you’ll suspect Mr. Matthews wrote his book twenty years ago, and sat on it until retiring from The Agency. Too bad, because in 1993 this story may have made technical and…
