The Concept

Few people know Xerox invented the PC…

…yes, in 1973 Xerox’s engineers in Palo Alto built something they called the Alto Workstation. It looked like this:

Xerox Alto, the world’s first personal computer

Those same engineers connected the workstations together with another invention, ethernet cables to perform “inter network routing”. Guess what that became…yes, the “internet”. DARPA’s first internet computers were Xerox Alta workstations.

Today Xerox’s greatest claim to fame is a missed opportunity, the personal computer; though they invented and built the technology to make it happen, Xerox’s management couldn’t conceive of hundreds of millions of computers in hundreds of millions of homes.

Imagine, if the quality of their vision had matched the quality of their technology.

You could say the same thing of the Lumiere brothers…
