“Black Panther” — with spoilers
Africa — it’s not just for Africans anymore!
If you’ve yet to see “Black Panther” and don’t want to know the plot in advance, stop reading now. If you haven’t seen it and aren’t sure if you want to invest $10 and 135 minutes, read on, maybe I can help you decide.
“Black Panther” is spectacle, colorful costumes, wonderful scenery, whether CGI or real, lots of action scenes Coogler and crew filmed and edited at a frantic pace, from a near-dizzying number of angles, and an attractive Afro-centric score that contributes to the film (Apart from somber scenes, when we revert to standard western music. Sorry, oboes don’t remind us of Africa).
Don’t worry about whatever politics you think the film might contain. The message or messages are there, but if you’re at all into superhero or action films, you’ll probably like “Black Panther”.
There’s no doubt Coogler meant to deliver a message, but he does it artfully, so what you perceive the message to be may depend less on the film than it does on you. I perceived his messages to be aimed mostly at black Americans, and that’s OK, because by the end of its run, this film will have reached most black Americans — and Coogler will have given the rest of us a great film.
