Read without fear, there are no spoilers ahead. I won’t reveal the plot, but I will reveal the film, because “Black Panther” may not be what you think it is.

If you’re hoping for a black victimist drama, the film may disappoint. While it doesn’t avoid the issues of colonization and slavery, its take on victimism may not be what you’re hoping for.

On the other hand, if you choose not to see “Black Panther” because you don’t want to subject yourself to a black victimist mantra, you’ll needlessly miss a very good film, not a very good afro-centric film, a very good film film.

Yes, the cast of “Black Panther” is preponderantly black, but the story’s about Africans, set in Africa, and if Forrest Whitaker’s the least compelling actor on your stage, well, let’s just say, the cast do not suffer from being black.

And no, “Black Panther” isn’t about evil white men. True, there is a white villain, but he’s essentially a caricature, a greedy, narrowly focused, one armed South African thief, who plays a hapless foil for the real villain, who not only happens to be black, but has to be black, whose blackness is part of the story, whose blackness gives the story its impact, without whom the story would lack its meaning.
